The DIAL House Shopmobility service, based in Chester’s Frodsham Street car park, provides mobility scooters and wheelchairs to enable people with disabilities to access city-centre shops and facilities. Since securing a Chester City Council contract to run the service at the end of July 2007, DIAL House has handled over 1000 bookings for mobility aids.
In January 2008 Mrs M Wilson, the 1000th customer and a regular user of the scheme, was presented with a home-made cake baked at DIAL’s Community Café premises in Hamilton Place. Mrs Wilson is pictured seated on one of three brand new scooters purchased with thanks to a substantial donation from the Dorothy Rylance Charitable Trust.
The fleets of scooters and wheelchairs have both been increased and the service now has capacity to help even more people with mobility difficulties. For a one-off joining fee from just £10, anyone can book a scooter or wheelchair between 10am and 4pm every day, including weekends, as often as they like. Alternatively, low-cost daily hire fees apply to visitors or tourists. Wheelchairs are also available to take away on loan.
